I received the Better than Chocolate 2 rechargeable vibrator free of charge directly from Nomi Tang, in exchange for a fair and honest review. I’d heard of Nomi Tang and the ‘Better than Chocolate’ sex toys in the past, but never owned any of this range personally. I was obviously intrigued by a sex toy making such a big claim. Better than chocolate? Really?

There’s no doubt about it, that tagline is fantastic bait to hook attention, especially those who love chocolate. Women stereotypically love chocolate, and seeing as this vibrator is for women it seems a perfect match. Probably not what I’d choose to call a vibrator, but there we go. It obviously works for some people, as the Better than Chocolate vibrator (first version) won the Red Dot Design award back in 2010.

So what’s different about the Better than Chocolate vibrators? They have a slider style control. To increase then decrease the vibration speed, just slide your finger up and down the strip you can see on the front. Simple.

There’s also a traditional power on/off button which also allows you to choose different vibration patterns.

Let’s start from the beginning.

What you get in the box

In the nicely presented and compact box you get the Better than Chocolate 2 vibrator, a USB lead to charge it up and a small instruction manual.

First impressions

better-than-chocolate-2-16

The Better than Chocolate 2 vibrator is made from a tactile, velvety soft silicone and has been shaped to fit nicely in the hand. It feels natural to place your middle or index finger on the protruding tip to help guide it to where you want stimulation. It’s easy to figure out, both with regards to turning on and changing the vibration speed and also how to charge it up. It’s not so big that it would be an intrusion to couples’ sex and it’s not so small that you’d lose it in the sheets if you lost grip. The ‘wings’ to the sides help keep a firm grip of it even with lubricant use. A nicely designed sex toy which has obviously had some thought put into it.

Material & measurements

The Better than Chocolate 2 vibrator is covered with body safe silicone (so don’t use silicone lube with it, just water based lube or hybrid types).

The vibrator measures 1.75 inches across the width of the front, and maximum 3.5 inches length tip to tip down the curve of the back. Without the curve tip to tip length of the front is 3.25 inches.

Charging up

To charge it up, simply plug in the jackpin end of the lead into the small port made for it. You need to make sure you press it all the way in; this port has been designed so that it seals to a waterproof level in between charges so that you can clean it thoroughly and use it in water. The other end plugs into any USB port, and the Nomi Tang symbol on the front control panel area flashed red while charging. This is pleasing to the eye as well as useful.

Functions

As well as the slider control which increases or decreases vibration speed/intensity, you can choose between the different vibration patterns too. You do this by pressing the button (also used to turn on and off) and then hold for off. The functions I’d describe as:

  • Constant vibration
  • Oscillating vibration
  • Quick ascending vibration (almost a pulse)
  • High frequency thrum
  • Dot-dot-dot-dot-pause and repeat

My favourite is, as usual and rather boringly, the constant vibration as I can just lift it to cease stimulation and I like keeping it on a high if not the highest intensity too.

During use

During use the top level of vibration intensity was enough to make me orgasm through clitoral stimulation, but I definitely had to work at it. It wasn’t a case of laying back and letting it happen, as with my top favourite sex toys. However I know that not everyone is a total power Queen like me! If you still like your vibrators powerful but perhaps not jack-hammer level then this would be a great choice in my opinion. It’s not weak like some of the cheaper and in my eyes, low quality vibrators, yet the sliding scale of control lets even those unused to vibrating pleasure experiment with a good range of stimulation.

Talking of control, the slider method of vibrating control on the Better than Chocolate 2 vibrator is rather unique – well, I haven’t seen it on another vibe any way. You simply slide your finger over the white strip either up or down and it increases or decreases the vibrating speed. Personally it may as well just remain on high for me but like I say if you like to experiment with different speeds, whether for a solo tease or to use on your partner during foreplay (men are generally more sensitive to vibration over their shaft, penis tip and balls) then you’ll find this useful. It is particularly useful if you want to reduce the vibration speed to low just after an orgasm, when you’re still in the throes of pleasure but don’t want an immediate shut-off from the stimulation. It’s nice to let it linger a while sometimes. Is that just me? Maybe it’s just me.

I prefer using the Better than Chocolate 2 vibrator with only a touch of water based lube; too much and the power seems to be less intense for me and I have to work even harder to reach orgasm. By working harder I mean moving it round to chase the specific spot of stimulation, concentrating on my arousal levels and generally not just ‘laying back and let it happen’. With a Doxy wand or the iGino One an orgasm for me is guaranteed regardless of what I do (as lng as they’re against my clit somehow) but with the Better than Chocolate 2 I have to really focus on what I am doing and how. The intensity level seems lower in the bath or shower too and I preferred to use it laying down. Probably as then I could concentrate on the toy and my arousal, not on keeping my balance as well. Yeah, I’m pretty lazy.

The type of vibration isn’t very high frequency like the tiny bullet vibrators of watch battery fame, nor is it deeply thuddy like a powerful wand vibrator. It’s between the two. I would personally prefer the vibrations to be closer to the surface of the toy, they seem to be muffled somewhat inside the toy, albeit focussed in the right place in the protruding part you guide to your erogenous zones and clitoris with your fingertip during use.

I do have to keep hold of this toy, it’s not one that you can clamp to you with your legs and it doesn’t stay in place (at least, not comfortably) between you during sex. I therefore find it better for masturbation on my own.

Summary

Although I can reach orgasm with the Better than Chocolate 2, I find I only select it for use when I know I have enough time to lock the door, lay back in bed, get naked and comfortable and let myself drift away. For me, it’s not a quickie sex toy and it’s not one I choose to use during sex with my partner as I need to focus on using it correctly (for me I mean; ie. getting myself to orgasm with it) rather than being distracted by what he’s up to or other events at the time.

The slider control is a lovely unique feature but as I prefer it on high most of the time – apart from that ‘linger moment’ just after – I don’t use it much. Perhaps others will find it amazing and the best feature about it. The fact that the Better than Chocolate 2 vibrator is waterproof is a huge plus and makes it easy to clean and worry-free to use with water based lube. I don’t choose this toy for use in the bath or shower so the waterproofness’ usefulness is pretty limited to keeping the toy completely hygienic for me.

The vibrator is easy to charge up and retains the charge for 3-4 uses for me personally. I use it for about 20-30 minutes each time, which I know is quite a while compared to some women reaching orgasm. I did say I need to concentrate on it! If you’re after a big clitorally thumping and juddering vibrator, this probably isn’t the toy for you. If you find high frequency, ‘tinny-tone’ bullet vibes too weak and annoying, then you may like this vibe. In my opinion it’s a medium intensity vibrator which would suit those new to vibrators (but looking for new technology and something non-phallic) up to those used to vibrators but intimidated or not into the very strongest and most powerful vibes out there.

If you’re interested in trying it out for yourself, you can buy the Better than Chocolate 2 vibrator here for $89.90 which at today’s rates works out to about £57.
