LELO Massage Candle: Black Pepper and Pomegranate Review

LELO asked what I would like to review, and contrary to perhaps the ‘ergonomic luxury vibrator’ crowd’s first shouts from across the room, I went for a candle.

A candle?

Yes, a candle.

I like candles. LELO make candles and I wanted to try one out.

I have been a long time fan of Jimmyjane massage candles and in terms of scent appeal the Yankee candles are amazing. I have two Yankee candles on my desk to light in times of pressure, they really do ease the atmosphere and get me centred. Jimmyjane massage candles have featured in many of my sexploits through the years with both male and female sexual partners. Learning that LELO had created massage candles, a couple of years ago, I naturally wondered how they’d compare.

Now, I have one. The Black Pepper and Pomegranate massage candle from LELO was sent to me free of charge in exchange for an honest and fair review. It usually retails for £19.90 and you can buy it from LELO.com here.

The packaging was as elegant as you’d expect from LELO, as you can see in the pictures. I received it at the same time as the LELO Mia 2 USB rechargeable bullet vibrator.

Removing the lid from the candle and the internal protective disc, I was a bit disappointed not to be immediately greeted with a powerful scent. In fact I could barely smell the candle at all.

Product Info

The candle stands at 3 inches tall, smaller than I had thought. The diameter across the top opening is 2.8 inches.

Ingredients: Glycine soja (soy) wax, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), prunus armeniaca (apricot) kernel oil, perfum (D-limonene, linalool, hexylcinnamaldehyde).

During use

Lighting the candle is easy, just trim the wick slightly before you do. There’s an instruction leaflet and everything. The ‘wax’ (Glycine Soja, or soy, wax) begins to melt into a pool of oil once the candle is lit. After about 20 minutes or so you can pour a small quantity into your hands, or directly on to your partner, and start the sensual and/or erotic massage.

  • Luxurious, classy and elegant looking
  • Very romantic to give as a gift (Valentine’s Day, birthdays, Christmas or any time of the year)
  • Ornamental looking on the bedside, can be left out discreetly
  • Scents available you wouldn’t easily find elsewhere
  • Body safe for versatile (both relaxing and sexy) couples fun

  • The scent isn’t very strong or immediately apparent upon opening or lighting
  • Candle is quite small for the price
  • The glass shouldn’t have black paint flaking from the rim even when it’s brand new
  • The oil, once the candle has melted, doesn’t absorb into the skin as completely as other leading massage candle brands

Although the LELO Flickering Touch candle is doubtless a romantic gift and a beautiful adornment to any bedroom, it does let itself down in a few areas. I would prefer the scent to be a lot stronger, although I would need to compare the scent I have to the other candles in this same range before writing off the entire collection as weak in the scent department.

It’s expensive for the size, but not as expensive as the Jimmyjane variants. The oil does leave a heavier feel to the skin, more of a drag than a greasy feel though. Those who aren’t quite as picky won’t feel the need to immediately get up and wash off the residue, but I can’t even leave lip balm on my lips without having to scrub it off. The ingredients all appear to be body safe for external use, and the oil/wax melts at a temperature safe enough to be drizzled on to the body for a foray into waxplay, a departure from traditional romantic advances in foreplay.

Allowing couples to extend their bedroom adventures while unwinding at the end of a hard day, this Flickering Touch candle from LELO only needs a few improvements and it would rate a higher score. It works, it’s lovely, but it’s not the best I’ve ever had. At present, it’s getting 7/10 on the Cara Sutra scale.

You can buy a LELO Flickering Touch massage candle from LELO.com here for £19.90. The other scents available are Snow Pear and Cedarwood, and Vanilla and Creme de Cacao.
